The Copenhagen based Reffelt Brøgger Studio (RbStudio) is a spatial studio working within the field of art, architecture and design, consisting of the two designers Fie Reffelt and Nan Sofie Brøgger. Their primary focus is to make environments and spatial experiences that inspire and involve people in order to encourage imagination and reflection.
The studio embraces a broad interpretation of their profession and is always seeking to experiment with the concept of space in order to break habitual thinking. This has led the studio to create projects for a wide range of companies, organisations, public institutions as well as cultural events and the studio thrives on the variety, versatility and challenges that come from this. From a children’s exhibition at SMK, a moving stage at Roskilde Festival, a playful and dynamic exhibition venue for Jeppe Hein at Copenhagen Art Festival, a scenography for a TV-production and a toolbox for Space10 - to name a few.
Conversation with Reffelt Brøgger Studio
Where are you from and where do you currently live?
We are both from different places in Denmark but we live and work in Copenhagen.
When did you become an artist and what was your first project?
It is difficult to determine the precise moment of becoming what you are. But the first time we were set in a professional context and recognized by others might have been the first defining moment for us. In 2010 we created a chair that was exhibited at Design Museum Denmark. With an innovative view at "the upholstered chair" and through the aesthetics as well as the structure of the chair we told the story of how upholstery was still needed. Upholstery wasn’t just a parasite on the chair but a unique construction that could be challenged and made interesting. This was one of the first moments we started telling our stories and defining our joint basis for our art and design.
Did you study art in school, if so where?
We both hold an MfA in spatial design from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design.
During her studies Fie Reffelt also studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Nan Sofie Brøgger at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.
What inspires you? Any particular artists?
Things that aren’t what they seem and make your mind wonder. Things in process and the changes, that come alive, that challenges our way of thinking and our perception of the reality that surrounds us. And last but not least things that speaks to us through tangibility and our sensory apparatus.
Other artists that we love to look at and that inspires us, is for instance; The artist Erik Olofsen, architect Lebbeus Wood, artist Yayoi Kusama, set designer Es Devlin, the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, artist Dawn NG and the artist Chiharu Shiota. A common denominator for all of these references is their spatial approach and the creation of new universes. Universes that are fabricated, unknown, but mixed with a reality - through their recognizable features - appeal to our empathy and imagination, and thereby expands our imagination.
What are some of the ideas behind your work?
Reffelt Brøgger Studio – RbStudio – is a spatial studio working within the field of art, architecture and design. Our primary focus is to make environments and spatial experiences that inspire and involve people in order to encourage imagination and reflection.
Over the last five years the studio has created projects for a wide range of companies, organizations, public institutions as well as cultural events. It is our expertise to develop unique and often site-specific solutions in both smaller and larger scale. The outcome of a project varies depending on the project, the client or the context. Through each project the studio handles the entire process from the generating of concepts and all the way to the final realization. The studio develops and executes projects in different types of constellations both in-house, as part of collaborations or via partnerships.
